Billing cycle
Telstra’s billing cycle does not start at the first day of the month and end on the last day of the month. To find out how much of your mobile data plan you have consumed and when exactly your billing cycle starts and ends, use the following steps:
- Send an SMS text message containing the word ‘use’ to number ‘176’
- You will receive an SMS text message from Telstra containing information a) how much of your monthly data allowance you have used up to date, and b) how many days are left in your billing cycle. You can use this information to determine the exact start and end date of your billing cycle.

‘Burning’ a blank sim
- The blank SIM is not active on the mobile phone network.
- When you insert the SIM in a phone, the phone (actually it is the SIM, really) asks you to enter a PIN to unlock the SIM.
- Telstra has given you a PUK and PIN that is hardcoded in the SIM.
- Telstra knows what (hardcoded) PUK and (softcoded) default PIN belong to this SIM, based on the SIM serial.
- You can now enter the PIN on the phone and the SIM will be able to connect to the mobile phone network, register with the network and operate according to the Telstra plan.
Router SIM
If an active SIM is inserted in a router (it could even be a normal mobile phone SIM), Telecoms can raise a request with Telstra to have the plan changed to make this a router service.
